The Pittsburgh Steelers have found themselves at the center of intense speculation regarding their quarterback situation, with rumors generating questions from both analysts and fans. The two primary scenarios that have captured attention are the potential re-signing of Russell Wilson and the pursuit of Aaron Rodgers -- both of whom are established veteran quarterbacks.

Amidst the ongoing quarterback discussions surrounding the Steelers, one intriguing possibility has been overlooked: the potential acquisition of Atlanta Falcons quarterback Kirk Cousins. Just last year, the Falcons made a substantial commitment to Cousins, signing him to a four-year, $180 million contract with a guaranteed $100 million. However, the Falcons' decision to select quarterback Michael Penix Jr. with the eighth overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft sent shockwaves through the league. This move was particularly baffling given the team's recent investment Cousins, and the age dynamics involved. Cousins, who was 35 at the time, joined by Penix, one of the older quarterback prospects in the draft, was 23 on draft night. This age disparity, combined with the significant financial outlay for Cousins, left many people questioning the Falcons' long-term strategy.

The situation surrounding Cousins remains largely static, with no significant updates emerging. The absence of any concrete moves or trade discussions suggest that the Falcons are likely planning to retain Cousins, at least for the immediate future. However, on "The Breer Report," Albert Breer, a senior reporter for Sports Illustrated's MMQB, provided insights into Cousins' situation. Breer revealed that Cousins had requested a meeting with Falcons owner, Arthur Blank, and that the two had engaged in a professional and productive discussion. Even though it doesn't mean the team's plans are changing, Blank made it clear that he'll do what's best for the team.

"Kirk Cousins told Arthur Blank, 'I want to go somewhere where I can start next year,'" Breer stated.

Breer further elaborated on the financial complexities surrounding Cousins' contract, outlining the various options available to the Falcons. The team faces a significant financial decision: they could absorb a $90 million sunk cost by releasing Cousins after one year. Alternatively, they could retain him as a backup, triggering an additional $10 million vesting, which would result in a $100 million commitment over two years. This scenario equates to an average of $50 million per year, with Cousins serving as a starter for one season, and a backup for the next.

Finally, the Falcons could pursue a more creative solution by exploring potential trade opportunities with other NFL teams. That's where the Steelers come in.

"I think that the idea of working out a trade with another team makes a lot of sense to me at least," Breer continued.

This trade scenario presents the Falcons with the opportunity to essentially purchase a draft pick. By strategically covering a portion of Cousins' salary for a potential trade partner, the Falcons could effectively utilize that financial contribution as a "signing bonus" incentive. In exchange for this financial accommodation, the Falcons must act quickly, as delaying this decision would eliminate their ability to release Cousins and potentially hinder their trade negotiations.

The Steelers May Be A Good Fit For Cousins

Much like the Falcons' approach of utilizing Cousins as a mentor, he could serve a similar role in Pittsburgh. Cousins is still in the recovery phase of his Achilles injury in Week 8 of the 2023 season with the Minnesota Vikings, although he led the Falcons for most of the 2024 season until he was benched for Penix. Having completed a full season of health post-injury, he expected to perform at an even higher level in the coming season. This situation parallels that of another veteran, former division rival, Rodgers, who also recently faced an Achilles injury.

Given Cousins' proven passing ability, combined with the Steelers' acquisition of DK Metcalf, he is a strong quarterback possibility that should not be dismissed. What are your thoughts? Let us know in the comments below!
