NFL Insider: Steelers Are Now "Getting Closer" To Quarterback Solution With 1 Player

The Pittsburgh Steelers are waiting to find out who their starting quarterback is going to be for the 2025 season, and the organization will not know until Aaron Rodgers makes up his mind on what he wants to do with his future. Rodgers is pondering if he wants to continue his playing career, or sign with a team like the New York Giants. It has seemed like the most likely outcome would be Rodgers ending up in Pittsburgh, but the process has been long and drawn out, which has chipped away at any sort of optimism.

Rodgers has also reportedly taken interest in playing for the Minnesota Vikings, but the organization does not seem to feel the same way. Minnesota wants to see what it has in JJ McCarthy, and bringing in a guy like Rodgers would make that difficult. There is no timeline for a final decision from Rodgers, but it is hard to imagine this saga can go on for much longer.

NFL insider Josina Anderson believes the Steelers think they will get Rodgers to sign, which will make him the team's starting quarterback in 2025.

The Steelers have some optimism surrounding the Rodgers situation, but the veteran is extremely unpredictable. No one truly knows what he will do or when he will do it, besides himself, but the clock is ticking as the 2025 NFL Draft is just over a month away.

It is hard to tell how interested Rodgers would be in playing for Pittsburgh. He probably wouldn't be able to run the show like he has before in his career, so it depends if he is comfortable not being fully in control. He has had a visibly friendly relationship with Head Coach Mike Tomlin throughout his career, but the two having a working relationship might not be something Rodgers is in interested in.

Anderson didn't say who her source was, but it sounded like the Steelers truly believe they are leading the sweepstakes over the Giants. The only issue is whether or not Rodgers wants to continue playing football. If the quarterback decides to return to the game, the Steelers are by far the best option, assuming the Vikings still are not interested. That is the apparent number one landing spot that Rodgers would like to go to, but there doesn't seem to be a need for him there.

Steelers Signing Aaron Rodgers Would Be An Upgrade

Rodgers is not the player he used to be, but he is still a better quarterback than any of the other options available for Pittsburgh. Russell Wilson is still looking for his next team, and some in the Steelers' fan base want the organization to re-sign him over Rodgers. This would be fine, but Rodgers provides the Steelers with a slightly higher ceiling.

Rodgers had a shaky year in 2024, but he was coming off of a serious Achilles injury the season prior. As the season went along and the quarterback got more comfortable, his play improved. The New York Jets were by no means a good team, but Rodgers was a solid quarterback. If he can bring those skills to Pittsburgh where he will have a better supporting cast, Pittsburgh could have a decent chance to be legitimate competitors in the AFC. The veteran threw for nearly 4,000 yards and 28 touchdowns through 17 games for New York, which is exactly the kind of production the Steelers' passing game needs.
