Steelers Defender Gets Honest About Pittsburgh's Current Quarterback Situation: "Aaron [Rodgers], Come On Dog"

The Pittsburgh Steelers' offseason has been dominated by speculation and rumors surrounding the vacancy at the starting quarterback position. However, the Steelers' activity in free agency extends beyond the quarterback dilemma, with the organization making significant moves to strengthen its offensive arsenal. Notably, they've signed DK Metcalf, a wide receiver with an impressive resume, including a Second Team All-Pro selection in 2020 and two Pro Bowl nominations. The crucial question that remains unanswered, however, is who will be the quarterback delivering the ball to these dynamic guys? The quarterback position is the final piece of the puzzle.

DeMarvin Leal, a defensive end currently playing for the Steelers, entered the professional ranks after being selected by the team in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft. In a recent appearance on the Psychotic & Iconic Sports Podcast, Leal discussed a wide range of football-related topics. The podcast dove into various aspects of the Steelers' organization, including the team's offense, overall goals for the upcoming season, and, inevitably, the highly debated quarterback situation. During the interview, Leal was directly asked about his preference for the quarterback who would be tasked with delivering the ball to the Steelers' dominant receiving duo of Metcalf and George Pickens. His response provided valuable insight into his perspective on the team's offensive potential and the quarterback position.

"Anybody that could sit there and give that man the ball and place it wherever it needs to be placed," Leal answered. 

The NFL's free agency period has been characterized by a rapid pace and significant activity, particularly within the quarterback market. Teams across the league are moving quickly to address their quarterback needs, securing players to lead their offenses in the upcoming season. The Steelers, however, have lost both starting quarterbacks from their previous roster. Justin Fields, who was acquired by the Steelers last year, has signed a two-year contract with the New York Jets and is reportedly set to assume the starting role. Simultaneously, Russell Wilson, another quarterback who played for the Steelers, has joined the New York Giants. However, Wilson's starting position with the Giants remains uncertain, as the team has also signed veteran quarterback Jameis Winston and holds the third overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, suggesting they may be looking to draft a quarterback. 

In response to a question about which available quarterback he'd prefer to see deliver the ball to the team's offensive playmakers, Leal offered the following opinion.

"Look Aaron [Rodgers], c'mon dog," Leal shared. 

Aaron Rodgers presents a compelling case for his potential signing by the Steelers, having an impressive and extensive resume that speaks to his exceptional talent and accomplishments. As he approaches his potential 19th season in the NFL, Rodgers' career is filled with accolades. He has won a Super Bowl championship, and further cemented his legacy by earning the Super Bowl MVP Award. His individual skills has been recognized with 4 prestigious NFL MVP Awards, highlighting his consistent dominance at the quarterback position. Additionally, Rodgers' consistent excellence has earned him 10 Pro Bowl selections. He has also been named a First Team All-Pro four times, solidifying his standing among the NFL's elite. 

Rodgers' impressive career accomplishments are undeniable, but his potential signing by the Steelers is not without its share of concerns. The negativity surrounding his possible arrival stems from a combination of factors, including his well-documented personal "antics," his age, and his recent injury history. Many Steelers fans are expressing apprehension, particularly given reports that the team has already extended an offer to Rodgers and is currently awaiting his decision. This prolonged period of uncertainty has fueled uncertainties about Rodgers' level of commitment and desire to continue to play. 

His age, 41, is a significant point of contention. The ambiguity surrounding his decision raises questions about whether he intends to play another season at all. Furthermore, his recent Achilles tendon injury, sustained during the first week of the 2023 season with the Jets, is a cause for concern. This is a major injury, and at his age, it could potentially have a lasting impact on his mobility and overall performance.

The vocal support for the team's potential quarterback acquisition, specifically Rodgers, is becoming a recurring theme among Steelers players, demonstrating a unified front during this pivotal decision. Leal's direct endorsement follows closely on the heels of team captain Cameron Heyward's similar expressions of support, which he conveyed during a recent appearance on Good Morning Football. This consistent display of solidarity from key players paints a picture of a welcoming environment, should Rodgers choose to join the team. Such public backing suggests a strong sense of team cohesion and a desire to optimize the Steelers' chances for success.
