The Pittsburgh Steelers are a mysterious team heading into the 2025 NFL season. The organization has kind of fumbled the quarterback position as it allowed Justin Fields to leave and join the New York Jets. After that occurred, the franchise extended an offer to free agent quarterback Sam Darnold, but he opted to sign with the Seattle Seahawks. Pittsburgh doesn't seem to be a desirable destination for the position, despite the recent acquisition of DK Metcalf, which is something to think about as Aaron Rodgers takes more time to ponder his future in the NFL.

The Steelers pivoted their interests at the quarterback position to Rodgers after missing out on Fields and Darnold during the legal tampering period. It has been reported that the two sides have the framework of a contract in place, and whatever is holding up the deal is not contractual. It is simply the veteran quarterback taking his time deciding what exactly he wants to do in what could be the final season of his football career. Head Coach Mike Tomlin spoke to the media on Monday, and he shared that he has been in contact with Rodgers.

The veteran quarterback went into the Steelers facility just over a week ago and spent about six hours in the building. He spoke with Tomlin and met the rest of the coaching staff, which should seem like a good sign that he will be eventually signing in Pittsburgh. Tomlin has been talking with him since then, but there was no chance the media was going to be able to find out what those conversations have been about.

At this point in the offseason, it seems like Rodgers really only has two options when it comes to the 2025 season. He can sign and be the starting quarterback in Pittsburgh, or he can retire. There aren't any other teams in the league interested in him being their starter at the moment, despite his reported efforts to sign with the Minnesota Vikings

The only other organization that seemed to be seriously interested in Rodgers was the New York Giants. They filled out their quarterback room by signing Russell Wilson, and they are also in play to select a quarterback in with the third overall pick.

There could be countless reasons as to why Rodgers is taking so long to make a decision. The quarterback has been known for his off-the-field quirks, but the answer might be much more simple. This is the first time in Rodgers' career that he has been a free agent. He is soaking this up, and he also wants to make sure he makes the right decision. Tomlin is the perfect person to be in communication with Rodgers, as it is hard to imagine the head coach wouldn't be able to motivate Rodgers to sign.

Steelers Should Be Able To Make Aaron Rodgers More Successful

Rodgers is coming off of two rough seasons with the Jets, and it should be assumed that he wants to end his career on a better note. Pittsburgh has the highest-paid defense in the league, and there is no dysfunction throughout the coaching staff or the front office. This should allow Rodgers to return to form, especially while throwing to Metcalf and George Pickens

The veteran quarterback did not look good at the start of the 2024 season, but eventually turned things around. He threw for 28 touchdowns and nearly 4,000 yards, which is the kind of production Pittsburgh has been desperate for at the quarterback position.
