Steelers' Art Rooney II Provides Telling Update About The Riveting Pursuit Of Aaron Rodgers

The Pittsburgh Steelers have been in a hot pursuit of veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers ever since free agency officially opened. He is currently arguably the best option on the open market for the Steelers at the position, and his play improved throughout the 2024 season as he put more time between the present and his Achilles injury. Nothing is simple with the quarterback, and the process has been long and drawn out as he continues to take his time making his decision about his future.

It is always hard to tell what Rodgers is thinking as the quarterback has a very tight circle, and he is the only one who can truly tell what he is going to do next. The Steelers are the only realistic landing spot for him for the 2025 season if he intends on being a starter, but the quarterback has also been weighing the idea of retirement. His Monday throwing session with DK Metcalf made it seem like retirement is a distant thought, and all signs point to him signing in Pittsburgh.

Team President Art Rooney II spoke with the media on Tuesday, and he shared that things are going well when it comes to signing Rodgers.

Head Coach Mike Tomlin was a lot more mysterious when he spoke to the media and addressed the Rodgers-situation, while Rooney doesn't seem afraid to let it all hang out. Based off of the owner's comments, it seems like fans should expect Rodgers to finally ink his contract in Pittsburgh soon, which should mean the quarterback situation is all figured out for the 2025 season. Rodgers would be the starter while Mason Rudolph backs him up -- and drafting a quarterback is probably still on the table.

Rodgers is a very meticulous guy, and this is a very important decision for him as he is likely entering the last year or two of his career. It is his first time entering free agency, and it will probably be his last. He needs to be sure he is making the right decision after the last two years did not go his way with the New York Jets. The Jets wound up with just five wins on the year in 2024. That is not how a four-time MVP wants to go out, which makes this upcoming season critical when deciding the quarterback's legacy.

Pittsburgh's ceiling could be pretty high with a player like Rodgers under center. He had a down year in 2024, yet he still managed to throw for 28 touchdowns and nearly 4,000 yards. The second half of the season was much better than the first, which should have fans in Pittsburgh relatively optimistic if he winds up donning the black and gold in 2025.

Steelers' Contract With Aaron Rodgers Will Be Interesting To See

There has been a lot of varying reports about what kind of deal Rodgers would eventually be signing in Pittsburgh. Many have wondered if it would be one or two years, and for how much money. The quarterback is still serviceable, but he is no longer at the point of his career where he is near the top of MVP conversations. The consensus seems to be that the deal will come in at $40 million or under $40 million, which overall is good news. Pittsburgh has a ton of cap space moving forward, and some cap gymnastics can be performed in 2025 to make sure the organization has some wiggle room for the upcoming season.
