The Pittsburgh Steelers would be starting Mason Rudolph at quarterback if the 2025 season started right now. The dramatic Aaron Rodgers saga has yet to be resolved as the NFL Draft is quickly approaching. At some point, however, regardless of Rodgers' decision, the organization needs to plan for the future at the most important position in all of sports. Some have theorized that the franchise is going to make a big move for a signal-caller during the 2026 NFL Draft, but it's not out of the question for General Manager Omar Khan to select one of the prospects that will be available in 2025.

It's pretty much certain that Cam Ward will be the first overall selection in the draft, but it is a little bit of a mystery for the rest of the quarterbacks. The Steelers showed that they were not afraid to reach for the position back in 2022 when Kenny Pickett was taken, but Kevin Colbert was the head of the front office at that point. Khan could have different plans in mind, or he could surprise the fan base a bit and draft a signal-caller early.
The rumors have started to swirl regarding Pittsburgh and Shedeur Sanders. Many believe that he will be available when Khan and co. are on the clock at 21 if Sanders falls out of the Top 10. The biggest competition for some other teams interested in Sanders is the New York Giants. With the third overall selection, a struggling franchise could look to bring in a quarterback. That likelihood became more possible after a report on Monday evening.

The Giants could go in a number of different directions with their first pick in the draft, but the recent talk has suggested that a quarterback wouldn't be on the table. This could have changed when news broke regarding New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr having a concerning shoulder injury. New York could have been prepared to trade up and back into the first round jump the Steelers if Sanders fell, but now the Saints lurk with the ninth overall selection.

The Giants are clearly taking the possibility of drafting Sanders with the third pick very seriously. It's not normal to send out an entire group of important members within an organization for a private workout with a prospect coming out of college. This hints at the fact that some things have changed inside New York's building, and interest in Sanders has grown. He could be one more strong showing away from knowing where he will start his NFL career.
There is always the possibility that the Giants are trying to tempt a team to trade up to the number three spot. If a franchise like New Orleans gets word that New York is leaning towards drafting Sanders, an insane offer could come in for the Saints to jump from nine to three. For Pittsburgh, this workout is bad news if the Steelers' brass is seriously interested in taking the quarterback if he begins to fall come draft weekend.

Steelers Will Have Other Quarterback Options If Sanders Is Not On The Board
Pittsburgh needs help on the defensive line, but it's nearly impossible to win Super Bowls at the professional level without a formidable signal-caller. Jaxson Dart, Jalen Milroe and Tyler Shough are just a few names to keep an eye on as the draft progresses. Overall, if the organization does have an intense desire to draft Sanders, it will be off the table if Sanders' private workout with the Giants goes well. He will then be expected to go to New York at the third overall pick.
