The NFL Draft serves as a crucial annual avenue for every team to strengthen its roster by acquiring talented players who can contribute to the franchise's long-term success. Given the profound importance of the NFL Draft in shaping a team's future, it naturally generates a significant amount of speculation and discussion among fans, analysts, and insiders alike, all eager to predict the strategic moves and player selections that each organization will ultimately make.

During a recent appearance on 93.7 The Fan, Ray Fittipaldo, a journalist covering the Steelers for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, talked about the team's current state and future prospects. When specifically asked about the probability of the Steelers utilizing their coveted first-round draft pick on a quarterback in the upcoming 2025 NFL Draft, Fittipaldo offered his assessment in the form of a percentage โ€“ a figure that might very well diverge from the expectations among fans and analysts.

"If I had to say percentage chance... it's low, I'm gonna say 5, 10%, I don't think that much of a likelihood at all," Fittipaldo responded.

The ongoing debate surrounding who will fill the Steelers' vacant starting quarterback position has been largely dominated by the potential acquisition of veteran Aaron Rodgers. Numerous reports have indicated that the Steelers have extended a contract offer to Rodgers and are currently awaiting his decision. However, with the 2025 NFL Draft quickly approaching, the persistent questions about the Steelers' quarterback plans increasingly arise from the continued absence of an answer from Rodgers. This uncertainty surrounding his choice is directly influencing the speculation and analysis surrounding the Steelers' potential draft strategy and their overall approach to solidifying the quarterback position for the upcoming season.

Adding to the context, reports have consistently suggested that the Steelers intend to find their next long-term franchise quarterback through the NFL Draft, with potential selections happening in either the upcoming 2025 draft, or the following year. Given this widely reported long-term strategy, Fittipaldo's recent assessment regarding the likelihood of the Steelers drafting a quarterback in the first round of the 2025 draft takes on even greater significance and relevance in understanding their potential plans for the immediate future and beyond.

Despite the extensive discussions linking the Steelers to various quarterback prospects in the lead-up to the draft, Fittipaldo's recent insights offer a surprisingly different perspective on their potential first-round intentions. Reports have indicated that the Steelers have shown considerable interest in and have taken the time to evaluate several quarterbacks from this year's draft class, notably including Shedeur Sanders from the University of Colorado and Jaxson Dart from Ole Miss. Given these reported connections and evaluations, Fittipaldo's assessment of a low likelihood of the Steelers drafting a quarterback in the first round comes as an unexpected revelation.

How The Steelers' Draft Capital Affects Their Decision

While the quarterback position has dominated much of the offseason conversation surrounding the Steelers, it's important to note that other roster needs could also become focal points in their draft strategy. Furthermore, the Steelers possess intriguing draft capital that could significantly influence their approach to player selection. Currently holding the 21st overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, a selection that has generated considerable anticipation and is arguably their most crucial asset in this year's proceedings, the Steelers have the flexibility to address a variety of needs or potentially make strategic moves up or down the draft board.

A crucial factor to consider is the Steelers' absence of a second-round pick in the upcoming draft, a consequence of acquiring veteran wide receiver DK Metcalf. While Metcalf undeniably strengthens their receiving options, the lack of a second-round selection is a notable loss in their draft capital. This absence elevates the significance of their first-round pick even further, making it a critical opportunity to secure impactful talent. Additionally, it emphasizes the potential value of exploring trades involving current players or other draft picks to potentially maneuver back into the coveted second round, a range where many highly-rated players who might have been projected as first-rounders often become available.
