The Pittsburgh Steelers have a clear need, and once again it is at wide receiver. The organization finally fixed its issue at the position ahead of free agency during the 2025 offseason when Pittsburgh made a deal with the Seattle Seahawks to acquire DK Metcalf. The issue was fixed for about two months, but then the Steelers agreed to send George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys for future draft compensation. The Steelers are now in a similar spot to where they were ahead of the 2024 season, as there is only one true proven wide receiver on the team while everyone else will need to step up in a big way.

The Steelers also acquired Robert Woods as a free agent, who has had a pretty good career. However, he is nowhere near as productive as he used to be due to his age.

The expectation is that Aaron Rodgers is going to sign in Pittsburgh to be the starting quarterback, and a large portion of the fan base wants to see the franchise make a concerted effort to get him some more help at wide receiver. Team insider Ray Fittipaldo joined 93.7 The Fan on Friday, and shared a timeline for when a move at wide receiver might happen.

"I think they're gonna wait to see if Aaron Rodgers signs and then if Aaron Rodgers signs you kind of go out and find somebody who's gonna fit him." Fittipaldo said. "You don't wanna just go out now and sign the biggest name out there. Whether that's Keenan Allen or a Gabe Davis. There's guys out there with good numbers, but honestly I think you wanna get the right fit for Aaron Rodgers and everyone keeps coming back to Allen Lazard. We don't even know if he's available yet with the Jets, but that would be a good fit."

There are plenty of talented, veteran wide receivers that are still available on the open market. Fittipaldo named two of them in Keenan Allen and Gabe Davis, while Amari Cooper is also still available. All three players are still able to produce at a high level in the NFL, but the Steelers might be focused on finding the perfect fit for Rodgers, assuming the organization knows he is going to sign.

There has been a ton of talk about a handshake agreement between the organization and Rodgers, and if that were truly the case, then Pittsburgh would be able to make any wide receiver move knowing Rodgers would end up in the black and gold. The fact that Fittipaldo believes the franchise wants to wait until Rodgers is in Pittsburgh to make a move proves there might be some doubt about him signing from the organization.

Allen, Davis, and Cooper are all reliable options for the Steelers to explore. Cooper and Allen are both older, while Davis is coming off of a pretty serious injury. Allen Lazard was also mentioned by Fittipaldo, who played with Rodgers with the Green Bay Packers and the New York Jets. Lazard would be interesting, but he has seemed content on staying in New York.

Steelers Still Have Untapped Potential At Wide Receiver Position

Pittsburgh could acquire more talent at wide receiver, but there is also a big question mark at the position going into the 2025 season. Roman Wilson missed nearly all of his rookie year in 20224 due to a sprained ankle he suffered in training camp, and then a hamstring injury later in the year.

He played a handful of snaps against the Las Vegas Raiders, but none were all that meaningful. The young receiver could be something special, and if that is the case, bringing in more talent isn't a major concern.

Wilson could turn into a solid professional, while Calvin Austin III could take another step forward going into his fourth season. He is entering a contract year and he has improved in every season he has been able to play. There is a lot of mystery in the wide receiver room for Pittsburgh, but it could all turn out going well for the franchise.
