Scary Injury For Steelers' Broderick Jones Just Got Worse

Pittsburgh Steelers General Manager Omar Khan has not been shy with his approach since taking over the front office for the franchise back in May of 2022. The trenches have been a very important piece to his vision, which is why he traded up to select Broderick Jones in the first round for the 2023 NFL Draft. The lineman has underperformed throughout the majority of his career, but was starting to find his footing in 2025 over on the left side. Unfortunately, he suffered a mysterious neck injury while playing against the Chicago Bears back in November, which has fans wondering about the diagnosis.

Dylan Cook replaced Jones and played rather well, which has started to create some curiosity regarding who the team's starting left tackle will be come the 2026 regular season. Politics could get in the way if Jones is healthy, but it wouldn't be surprising to see Cook take over, especially if the Steelers decline Jones' fifth-year option in the coming months.

On Tuesday, Khan was able to get together with members of the media at the NFL Scouting Combine. The press has been waiting weeks to ask the general manager questions about roster construction plans, as well as what to expect from the franchise as a whole. It's safe to say that the mysterious ailment for Jones is lingering, and insider Ray Fittipaldo reported on what was said about the left tackle.

"Omar Khan said he did not know if Broderick Jones would be ready for training camp. Jones suffered a serious neck injury in November," Fittipaldo wrote on X.

This certainly changes a whole not. If Jones is not even ready to participate in training camp, Cook will have a clear path to the starting job. With over 10 selections in the 2026 NFL Draft, the Steelers could also surprise a lot of people and take the position early on. Overall, this is bad news for Jones and will give the fan base flashbacks to when safety Ryan Watts' career ended due to a neck injury that he suffered during a preseason game.

No one is ready to compare the lineman to Watts just yet; however, it is getting more confusing by the month. Everyone has been very quiet about what Jones is going through, and one can only assume that it may not be something that he can come back from. Even so, he may have played his last down with Pittsburgh if his fifth-year option is declined, and he is unable to play in 2026.

While he hasn't performed like a first-round selection, it's never good to see someone going through what Jones could potentially be experiencing. The injury was suffered in November, and he may not even be cleared to play football by August. That signals that something seriously went awry that November day in Chicago, and it could have long-lasting effects for the young player's career and life as a whole.

There may not be too many more updates on Jones in the near future. It's clear that the Steelers are purposely keeping his situation under wraps. When the franchise does presumably decline that fifth-year on his original rookie deal, it's possible that more reports emerge about what his current and future status may look like. As a whole, Khan's simple words about his status moving forward should raise several red flags.

Steelers May Just Focus On Developing Cook Moving Forward

Pittsburgh could not have disliked what Cook put on tape during his starting period. He was efficient, intelligent, and didn't perform poorly in the slightest. Now, it seems as if the team may have hit a crossroads with Jones because of an unfortunate injury. This could leave the door wide open to resources being dedicated to another player, and not the first-round selection from 2023. The job could quickly shift to Cook's to lose in the coming months.
