The Pittsburgh Steelers' first-round selection strategy has been a hot topic for weeks leading up to the 2024 NFL Draft, as is typical. However, recent speculation suggests that if the Steelers engage in a significant trade on draft day, it may involve acquiring a wide receiver. A new report released on Tuesday unveils a different angle, indicating that the Steelers are actually keen on moving up the draft board to secure a cornerback.

According to insider Tony Pauline from Sportskeeda, the Steelers are engaged in serious discussions with the Denver Broncos, aiming to orchestrate a trade that would facilitate their ascent in the upcoming draft. Their objective? To secure the standout cornerback from Toledo, Quinyon Mitchell.

“I'm told the Steelers and Broncos are talking trade as Pittsburgh is another team that is targeting Mitchell and would move up to draft him.”

The Steelers aren't alone in their pursuit of a trade with the Broncos to secure the highly sought-after cornerback. According to Pauline, the Philadelphia Eagles are also eager to strike a deal with the Broncos to position themselves to draft Mitchell.

Pauline did not disclose the compensation the Steelers would need to offer to leap from the 20th overall pick to the 12th. This maneuver mirrors their strategy from last draft when they traded up to acquire Broderick Jones

If the Steelers did pull off the trade to get Mitchell, the decision would be met with shock by many around the league. It's known that the Steelers do need another cornerback but many assumed their other needs were more pressing. The idea they are even considering a trade up for Mitchell is a testament to how much they value him.

Steelers 2024 Draft Could Shock Fans

As the 2024 draft approaches on Thursday and with Omar Khan and Mike Tomlin addressing the media, speculation abounds regarding the Steelers' draft strategy. The reality is, only those within the organization know the true plan. Steelers fans eagerly anticipate the unveiling of new additions to their team post-draft. However, even if a trade materializes and the Steelers select Mitchell at 12, it would address their cornerback need, but leave other significant gaps to fill.

As previously discussed, the Steelers have expressed interest in acquiring a prominent wide receiver through a trade. While many speculated Brandon Aiyuk could be the target, talks seem to have cooled as the San Francisco 49ers show little inclination to part with him. However, whispers suggest that the Steelers and 49ers might still orchestrate a significant move on the opening day of the draft.

Yet, amidst this speculation, a fresh report unveils additional trade possibilities. If the Steelers are truly determined to secure Mitchell, they are poised to exert every effort to climb the draft board. This resolve to aggressively pursue their targets has been a hallmark of their draft strategy in the past.

Another intriguing scenario looms: the inclusion of Broncos wide receiver Courtland Sutton in a potential trade package. Such a move could enable the Steelers to not only land Mitchell, but also secure Sutton, presenting an enticing two-for-one deal on day one of the draft.

While this notion may seem ambitious, the Steelers have demonstrated a willingness to explore unconventional avenues to bolster their roster. Thus, while it may be considered a long shot, the prospect of a trade with the Broncos that facilitates such a dual acquisition cannot be entirely discounted.
