The Pittsburgh Steelers surprised many pundits and fans when they revealed they would not be picking up running back Najee Harris' fifth-year option. Had the Steelers exercised the option, it would have guaranteed Harris roughly $6.79 million. By not doing so, Harris will become a free agent after the 2024 season.

Although the Steelers have traditionally been a run-heavy team, they made significant changes this offseason by hiring a Offensive Coordinator Arthur Smith. Smith faces the challenge of revamping one of the league's worst offenses. He is expected to implement a lot of play-action passing and a ground-and-pound rushing attack featuring Harris and Jaylen Warren. Many believe Harris will have his best season yet under Smith's guidance.
Steelers insider Gerry Dulac shared his insights into the offseason on The Rich Eisen Show, discussing the team's future plans for Harris. He has zero reason to believe that Pittsburgh has given up on their former first round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.
“Mike Tomlin loves Najee Harris and I thought it could be a bit of a battle between management and Mike Tomlin as to what they want to do. I do not think they have given up on Najee Harris. I expect them to sign him to some type of two-year deal that will make up for the $6.79 million that he would have made if they picked up his option.”
While some interpreted the Steelers' decision not to pick up Harris' fifth-year option as a sign that the organization might be ready to move on from him, Dulac believes otherwise. He anticipates that the Steelers will sign Harris to a two-year deal before the next season begins.
“They are not ready to give up on him. They wanted to see how he fits in Arthur Smith’s offense. I mean I just think it is a natural fit… I would be surprised if he did not have a fourth 1,000-yard season and even more. He is set up to have his best season yet. They are not ready to give up on him and I don’t think they will let him go. I think they will try and sign him to some type of two-year deal before they get to next season.”
Since entering the NFL, Harris has rushed for over 1,000 yards in three consecutive seasons, a remarkable feat that underscores his talent and often underappreciated performance. He has also never missed a start in his career.

As a first-round draft pick, Harris faced immense pressure to exceed expectations, yet he has consistently proven himself to be one of the most reliable running backs in the league despite receiving unfair criticism.
Steelers' Najee Harris Is Likely To Have An Incredible 2024 Season
With an improved offensive line and a better system in place, Harris is expected to have a career year. If he meets these expectations, it is likely the Steelers will offer him a new two-year deal, compensating for the declined fifth-year option. This move surprised many fans, as picking up his option could have saved money. Now, the Steelers are taking a gamble, potentially paying more if they wish to retain him.

Reports indicate that the Steelers wanted to see how Harris performs in Smith's new system before guaranteeing him additional money. While some feared this could upset Harris, many believe it will actually motivate him.
With an improved offensive scheme and the dynamic duo of Harris and Warren, the Steelers' running game is expected to be a major force in the 2024 season. Steelers fans are eagerly anticipating seeing their running backs dominate opposing defenses.
