The Pittsburgh Steelers have started their training camp in Latrobe and have completed several practices. However, one notable absence has been the one of quarterback Russell Wilson, who has yet to participate in training camp. Wilson experienced calf tightness on Thursday and hasn't practiced since.

This has given the Steelers' other new quarterback, Justin Fields, an opportunity to showcase his skills to the coaching staff. Fields has been taking first-team reps and has shown flashes of potential during camp. Although he's faced some challenges, the throws he's made have excited Steelers fans attending the practices.

After practice, Fields spoke with Missi Matthews about his experience with the new Offensive Coordinator, Arthur Smith, and his distinctive coaching style. Smith has been enforcing strict penalties for minor errors, aiming to minimize mistakes during critical moments. Fields shared his thoughts on Smith's disciplinary approach and how it impacts the team's preparation.
“It sounds kind of old-fashioned but if you jump offsides or have a little hiccup before the play even starts then everyone has to run a lap no matter who you are.”
Fields was asked by Matthews if the punishments were directed by Smith. Fields didn't hesitate, stating that Smith had outlined his new rules in a team meeting before practice.
“I mean yeah he said that this morning in the offensive unit meeting.”
Fields had high praise for the new offense he's been leading in first-team reps. He expressed enthusiasm about being coached by Smith, who joined the Steelers with a strong determination to revitalize the historically struggling offense.
Although Smith faces significant pressure, he brings a track record of success as an offensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans. Fields is confident and comfortable working with Smith, and appreciates the fresh perspective and coaching style he brings to the team.
“Yeah I mean I feel great. The great thing about Arthur is he communicates with us a lot. He talks to us about what we like and what we don’t like. So you know it’s quarterback friendly.”
The new-look quarterback room for the Steelers has been a focal point of interest lately. Wilson has missed every practice so far, and Steelers fans are eager to see how he performs once he's back on the field. Wilson injured his calf during a conditioning test on Wednesday while pushing a sled. It's a minor injury, and Head Coach Mike Tomlin has stated that he's keeping Wilson sidelined to create "short-term misery" for him.

Wilson, now 35 years old, acknowledges the need to be cautious about his health. However, he does want to be on the field taking reps with the first team. The Steelers coaches have decided to hold him back. He's known for his strong work ethic and likely doesn't want to give the coaches any reason to consider Fields as a better option.
Steelers' Arthur Smith Changing The Narrative
Smith is working to change the narrative around the Steelers' offense by emphasizing discipline. Smith, known for his meticulous attention to detail, is enforcing strict measures to prevent silly mistakes. The Steelers' offense, which has struggled in recent years, could benefit greatly from Smith's approach. He had significant success with the Titans, working with similar personnel to what he has in Pittsburgh.

The competition between Fields and Wilson continues to make headlines, with media pundits debating who the better option is. While Wilson is expected to be the starter, his absence from practice gives Fields more opportunities to prove himself. Regardless of who ultimately wins the starting job, the Steelers are likely to see an improvement over last season. Smith's coaching style and the adjustments he's making to the offense are generating optimism among fans and analysts.
